Fastpass +: Your questions answered!

Goodbye my old friend Fastpass…Hello FastPass + and My Disney Experience!

FastPass + at PoohI have to say that I am nostalgic about the old system because most of us frequent WDW visitors had that down to a science. But as of this month, the old fastpass machines at the entrance to the most popular rides are no more! Instead, all guests are now expected to take part in the new My Disney Experience, My Magic+, Magic Bands and FastPass + (FP+) online system.

Things work differently depending if you are staying on property or off site.

This is the same for all guests:

  • You select (and can change) your return time for the ride/experience.
  • You can only choose 3 FP+ per day
  • You can only get your 3 FP+ in one park each day
  • FP+ includes character experiences and seating for fireworks & parades
  • You can change your FP+ selections at any point, even during your return time(if you get to your ride return and see no line, you can adjust your FP+ at the entrance for a different ride)

Resort Guests: You can reserve your FastPass + for your vacation up to 60 days in advance. You do this by linking all of your party members together in My Disney Experience (this is super important if you are traveling with a larger group). Because of the 60 days pre booking, you will need to have an idea of where you want to go each day and what your FP+ priorities are for each park. (A great Disney Planner can help you with this!) Resort Guests also have the flexibility to adjust their FP+ reservations via the My Disney Experience app. This is really nice when you decide on the monorail to go to a different park or get to the park earlier than expected.

Off Site Guests or Annual Passholders: You will have to wait until you are in the park to book your FP+. You go to one of the numerous kiosks in each park and you can book your FP+. There are cast members at each to help you. You are not able to adjust via the My Disney Experience app, but there are cast members all over the place with an iPad in hand waiting to help you.

Where can you make FastPass + reservations? If you are a resort guest, you can make your reservations up to 60 days in advance from your home. Otherwise, you need to book at a kiosk in the park upon your arrival. Here is a list of where you can find the kiosks and cast members to assist you. You will find the locations away from the park entrance will have shorter lines in the morning.

I made my reservations…Now what?! Now you show up to the ride in the appointed hour mymagic+window of time (ex. 11:55-12:55) and place your park ticket or Magic Band to the Mickey. If it turns green you continue through the fastpass line, but if it turns blue, there is a problem or you are not back at the scheduled time frame. Keep your park ticket or Magic Band accessible because you will have to go through a second Mickey before you are allowed to ride. I am under the assumption that this is how they are timing the length of the FastPass + line, similar to when you ride standby and they give you a lanyard to hold through the line until you ride to keep track of the standby wait times.

I want to change my FastPass +…what do I do? If you decide to change your plans you can do it two ways. Resort guests can use the smart phone app to change the time or the experience. Any guest (resort, off site, annual passholders) can see a cast member with an iPad or visit a FP+ kiosk. I have seen guests making adjustments directly at the FastPass + entrance of the rides, but I am not sure if this is the official party line.

What is the most important FP+ to get? It really depends on your traveling party and your likes/dislikes. I will follow with a list of the FP+ options per park but you need to know that FP+ now includes experiences that you could not formerly fastpass in the old system. One thing you can now FP+ is parade viewing locations along with character interactions. Is this a priority to my husband who doesn’t care for parades? Absolutely not, he would rather be on a roller coaster. But for me, this is totally worth one of our 3 coveted FP+ reservations.
